The nation of Malawi is a small land-locked country on the southeastern side of Africa. Although it is a land rich with natural beauty and historical culture, Malawi is currently the 5th poorest nation in the world, ranking with Somalia near the bottom of Africa’s per capita income.
Besides the burden of overwhelming poverty, Malawi’s inhabitants are being ravaged by the growing pandemic of HIV/AIDS, which has infected an estimated 16% of the total population. Tragically, this little land has earned the nickname “The Orphan Nation” because of the one million children who have been left alone in the wake of this disease.
YouthCare was established in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi, to reach some of the orphaned Street Children trying to fend for their survival. The SafeHaven orphanage at YouthCare currently houses and provides supports to 12 boys that were previously living on the streets.
